Artwork description:
Nikifor Krynicki is a widely acclaimed primitivist painter, considered one of the greatest individuals in Polish art history. The offered work is distinguished by the setting of the action inside a room, where a group of seven figures - adults and children - have been placed, forming a kind of circle. The room is filled with various furniture and equipment, including a bed and a rust brown tiled stove. Numerous paintings can be seen on the walls. The dark color dominant is the grayish-brown clothes of the people depicted. Formally, the work has been built up with the help of a thick outline and expressive, flat color stain.
The presented composition stands out against the background of landscapes and single images of people, which are usually available on the art market. It delights with the richness and narrative quality of the depicted elements. In the work there is a discernible desire to show the world with as much detail as possible. The painting contains a number of formal and compositional means characteristic of Nikifor, such as simplification of the human silhouette, an attempt to portray convergent perspective and providing the representation with an author's description. The description "MATJKO" at the bottom of the work can even be regarded as a peculiar signature of the artist called Matejka of Krynica.
