Biography
Chapiro's paintings are very diverse, some are decidedly Cubist in style, others refer in style to the Impressionists and Fauvists, it seems that this artist enjoyed experimentation. He was friends with Marc Chagall and Raymond Cogniat. He was the son of a Lithuanian woodcarver and began his artistic education at the age of ten. In 1915, he moved to Krakow to study at the Academy of Fine Arts, and from 1918, he studied in Kyiv. During the Revolution, he designed posters, from 1921, he studied in St. Petersburg, while working as a theater decorator. In 1925, he left Russia for Paris, and settled in Montparnassus. From 1926, he exhibited his works at the Salon des Independents, among others. In 1939 he fled Paris and went into hiding. His works are in museums in the United States (Chicago), Russia (Moscow) and France (Jeu de Paume, Paris).
