Grzegorz Romańczyk, Grosze Głogowskie i krakowskie Zygmunt I Starego z lat 1505-1548, Krakow 2022, PREMIERE
A premiere study of one of the most important, if not the most important period of Polish modern numismatics, the period of monetary reforms that completely changed Polish money, i.e. the times of Sigismund I the Old. This book is the fruit of the author's many years of work on the minting of this king. It is an innovative approach to the subject of numismatics, that is, a combination of a book and a coin catalog. The author's intention was to create a publication not only for a narrow group of numismatists who collect the discussed coins of this king, but for everyone who likes history or would like to start their adventure with numismatics. The book describes minting technology in the 16th century, monetary reforms, Decius' "Treatise on Minting Coinage," minting ordinances of the period, and many facts about the life and reign of Sigismund I the Old. The catalog section, which presents more than 300 variants of groszes from the Głogów and Kraków mints, presents the types and subtypes of Pogon, Eagle and Crown coins discussed. The author reached many coins that have not been previously presented in any other publications. The rarity of the coins was determined according to the number of their occurrences in the archives of auction houses and in museum and private collections to which the author had access. This is the first such comprehensive and thorough study of this period as well as this denomination from the two mints described. Many collectors may be pleasantly surprised, as all the coins presented from numismatic auctions have found their way into private collections. Therefore, not a few people will find their own coin in the catalog, which in addition may turn out to be a very rare variant. The book is offered for pre-order, it has now gone to press and the release is scheduled for December this year. An added bonus is that each piece of the book purchased at this auction will have a personal dedication to the buyer from the author (on request, it is possible to send a piece without dedication).
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
