SPKL 191; Now o. III.8.27. Good condition. Full-page illustrations, vignettes, initials by Zygmunt Kaminski. Żeromski's historical novel set during the reign of Bolesław Chrobry. It was first published in 1906. The plot, despite the great distance in time, served the author to comment on the current political situation. The book tells the story of the legendary character Walgierz Udaly. Valgierz took as his wife the beautiful Helgunda, brought from France. He killed her and her lover Wislaw for marital infidelity. Żeromski presents an unusual, stylized take on this Tyniec-Vistula story about Walgierz, who rebelled against the Brave, and who, having learned about suffering and pain, will understand the king's humane and humanitarian attitude.
