Established in June 1862 by Alexander Wielopolsky, director of the Government Commission for Religious Denominations and Public Enlightenment, under a decree of Emperor Alexander II, on the basis of the Medical and Surgical Academy, which had been dissolved in 1862. It was located in the buildings of the Warsaw University, which had been cancelled by the Russian authorities in 1831. Its rector was Jozef Mianowski. It closed in November 1869 as part of repressions after the January Uprising.
