A young writer, George Webber, publishes his first novel, in which he candidly describes his relatives and his hometown. The book brings him success, but upon his return home, Webber faces accusations from his family and friends, who accuse him of stripping them of their privacy. Shocked and dejected, he leaves his hometown, embarking on a search for his own identity.
