(Estreicher). The basis of the news about the battle of Varna in 1444 can be found in two 15th-century accounts, namely in the Annals of Jan Długosz and in the work "O królu Władysławie czyli o klęsce warneńskiej" by the Italian Philip Buonaccorsi, appearing under the nickname Kallimach. The story of King Ladislaus was intended to shape and promote a positive image of the entire Jagiellonian house. Kallimach began his argument by evoking the memory of two representatives of the Jagiellonian dynasty who achieved (Varna) or aspired to achieve (Prince Casimir) the Crown of Saint Stephen. It is possible that this procedure was intended as a subtle reminder of the Jagiellonians' claim to the Hungarian throne. Both Dlugosz and Buonaccorsi, in describing the 1444 campaign of Ladislaus of Varna, used information provided in a letter from a direct witness of the events described, Andrew de Palatio, to Cardinal Louis of the title of St. Lawrence in Damascus, dated May 1445. Ladislaus III Varna (1424-1444 at Varna), king of Poland, king of Hungary as Ladislaus I (I. Ulászló) from 1440, elder son of Ladislaus Jagiello and Sophia Holshanska. Filip Kallimach, by name of Filippo Buonaccorsi de Tebadis Experiens (1437-1496 in Cracow), Italian humanist, poet and prose writer in Latin, starosta of Gostynin, secretary to Casimir IV Jagiellon, advisor to John I Olbracht, supporter of Polish independence from the Papacy.
