Władysław Szafer - Polish botanist, professor at the Jagiellonian University, director of the Botanical Garden in Cracow, long-time director of the Institute of Botany at the Jagiellonian University. Member of PAU and PAN, honorary member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and its Resources. He was engaged in nature conservation, floristics, paleobotany, plant geography. He was the founder of the Polish paleobotanical school, co-founder of Polish national parks, initiator of the restoration of the bison population in the Bialowieza Forest, participated in the creation of the International Bureau for Nature Conservation in Brussels, later transformed into the World Union for Nature Conservation.
