In November 1920, a large group of refugees from Transnistrian Ukraine arrived in Poland. The reason for this exodus was the military defeat of the Army of the Ukrainian People's Republic, which could not withstand the onslaught of the Soviet Russian army. In mid-November, members of the URL government and head of state Symon Petlura left Kamieniec Podolsk, and a civilian population of thousands also went into exile. A week later, the army left its own territory - on November 21 it crossed the Zbruch River and was placed in internment camps by the Polish authorities. In addition, the ranks of emigration were augmented by employees of Ukrainian foreign representations. At the end of 1920, there were about 35,000 Ukrainian refugees in Poland, most of them military.
