The story of several Polish emigrants who set out for Canada at the turn of the 20th century in search of a better life. Thanks to their unbelievable efforts, persistence in overcoming difficulties, they manage to gradually put down roots in the new land, giving rise to a compact emigrant community.
The author also shows the reasons for this exodus - social and political (including the story of the strike of the children of Września or the fate of Drzymała).
Wańkowicz's extraordinarily colorful language, reflecting the spirit of the era, apt comments, as well as quoted authentic letters make the book read with great pleasure and involvement.
