Thomas Venclova is a Lithuanian poet, writer, publicist and translator. He graduated from the University of Tartu (Tartu Ülikool), where he studied semiotics and Russian studies. Anti-communist. Activist in the human rights movement in Lithuania. In 1977 he was forced to emigrate from the USSR. He went to the USA, where he became friends with Czeslaw Milosz.
He translated the works of Cyprian Kamil Norwid, Zbigniew Herbert and Wislawa Szymborska into Lithuanian.
He lived for some time in Cracow.
He holds honorary doctorates from four Polish universities, including the Jagiellonian University.
