Minor rubbing, creasing and edge wear to the cover, otherwise good condition. Owner's signature. Cover and title page by Jan Młodożeniec. Second edition of Leopold Tyrmand's famous novel, set in the semi-literate Warsaw of the early 1950s. The second novel in the writer's oeuvre. "Tyrmand is the most perfect continuation of our romantic poetry, what took over its plume, he writes its continuation, but already to the measure of the new proletarian history. It is downgraded to the level of a bully, a pimp, a grandee, etc., but the spirit is the same" (W. Gombrowicz in "Diary"). "Tyrmand creates the literary language of the outcasts. He is their Kochanowski. He is their Balzac [...]. He made their gesture, dress, facial expressions the object of reflection. But at the same time he hollowed out their psyche, voiced their passions, confronted them with the problem of good and evil, taught them moral paradox. He is thus their Dostoevsky. He is truly a great writer. For shitty people" (A. Kijowski in Creativity). Quotes after: M. Fik "Polish Culture after Yalta," London 1989, p. 234.
