The book was published in a small edition, with severe interference from the censors - for the picture presented by the author differed significantly from the official version of events; Szpilman described, for example, the participation of Ukrainian and Lithuanian units in the suppression of the ghetto uprising, the activities of domestic blackmailers; the nationality of the German, whose help allowed the author to survive the occupation, was changed by the censors to Austrian. A full version of Szpilman's war memoirs was published in 2000
W. Szpilman (1911-2000) - composer and pianist of Jewish descent, author of many of the most popular hits of Polish popular music, during the occupation was in the Warsaw ghetto, after his escape he hid in the "Aryan" part of the city, after the fall of the Warsaw Uprising he remained in the ruined city.
