The book is set this time in the United States and Mexico, where Tom Wilmowski, recovering from an unpleasant incident with a rhino charge in Africa (see "Tom on the Black Continent"), is accompanied by Sally Allan, her mother and Petty Officer Nowicki. All three are guests at the ranch of Sally's uncle, Sheriff Allan. During one of his horseback excursions in the countryside, Tomek meets a young Navajo Indian, Red Eagle, and despite a rather unfortunate start to their acquaintance, a friendship develops between the boys. This young Indian becomes Tom's guide, shows him around the reservation of the local Apaches and arranges with him a hunt for eagles - 5 of whose feathers were officially awarded to young Wilmowski in recognition of his merit and courage.
However, the Apaches prove their true friendship only when they help Tom to free the kidnapped Sally. With great dedication they fight for the "White Rose" against another tribe of Indians - the Zuni, who, at the instigation of Mexican horse breeder Don Pedro, abducted the sheriff's niece. In the battle for a cause foreign to them, many of them are killed - led by the main chief and fighter to break out of the rule of the Americans, Black Lightning.
