STUDIA Mathematica. Lv. Editors. S. Banach, H. Steinhaus. 8. brochure.
Vol. 1: 1929. p. [4], 255.
Wraps slightly yellowed and crumbled, inside very good condition. Ex. uncut. Order card enclosed. The first issue of a periodical established in the Lviv mathematics community and being its unofficial organ. It dealt programmatically with the then new field of mathematics - functional analysis. "Studies" quickly became one of the world's most important journals devoted to this field of knowledge. "Of the 500 pieces of the circulation [...] about 200 were sold abroad, another 200 were exchanged for mathematical periodicals published at the most important universities in Europe and America, 100 were for sale at home" (M. Urbanek "Geniuses", War. 2014, p. 62). By the outbreak of World War II, 8 issues were published, the previously prepared issue 9 came out in 1940. In 1948, the journal was reactivated in Warsaw, and is still published today by the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (the latest volume came out this year and bears the number 267). The first volume offered here contains papers by, among others: W. Orlicz, H. Steinhaus, S. Mazur, Z. W. Birnbaum, S. Banach, W. Nikliborc.
