"In the small town of Monterey, just after the end of World War I, lives a group of paisanos, descendants of Spanish conquistadors. They are light-hearted people who share a deep disdain for work, so they live off looting and scraps scrounged from restaurants. They pass their time mainly sleeping, courting women and fighting over the most precious ore, wine. The novel's main character is Danny, who lives in the Tortilla Flat neighborhood, whose house becomes a meeting place for his friends, perpetually hungry for food and adventure: Pilon, Pablo, Jesus Maria, Big Joe the Portuguese and Pirate.
Adapting the themes and construction of the legends of King Arthur for his own use, Steinbeck has created a veritable Camelot in a California town and populated it with a colorful bunch of knights with manners straight out of Rabelais."
