HENRYK SIENKIEWICZ
KRZYŻACY. A novel in four volumes. Jubilee edition.
T. I-IV [set in 2 vols.]
Warsaw 1900. nakł. Gebethner & Wolff. 16d, pp. [4], 338; [4], 268; [4], 339; [4], 357, [1].
First edition of one of Henryk Sienkiewicz's most widely read novels. Printed in episodes in "Tyg. Illustrowana" from II 1897 to VII 1900, the book edition of the novel crowned the 25th anniversary of Sienkiewicz's writing career (hence "Jubilee Edition" on the title page).
"At the time of publication, the novel was a protest against Germanization carried out by the authorities of the Prussian partition. Sienkiewicz wrote Knights of the Teutonic Knights to foster the hearts of Poles. He wanted his book to show Poland in the period of the splendor of its arms...Krzyzacy, due to its anti-German message, was the first book published in Poland after the end of World War II." source: wikipedia.org.
