3 volumes of Henryk Sienkiewicz's superb historical novel, which is the first part of the Trilogy, written to gladden hearts in 1884-1888. Printing of the novel began in episodes simultaneously in the pages of "Słowo" and "Czas" in 1883.
The novel received an extraordinary reception from the public and critical praise.
As St. Tarnowski wrote: "[...] such a novel is not only an ornament and pride for literature, not only a masterpiece of art, not only a science of history accessible to everyone and unadulterated, but a cordyl of health for society, and thus a good, and, let us know openly, a great deed."
