Abrasions of spine edges, yellowing and browning of paper in places, otherwise good condition. Own stamps. Ex-librises. Vol. 3 of the most famous (three-volume) 19th century Polish edition of Shakespeare's works. The edition has an extensive introduction, the individual plays are preceded by a couple of pages of commentary, double-column printing, well-colored woodcut illustrations. Translations by Leon Ulrich (1811-1885), Jozef Paszkowski (1817-1861) and Stanislaw Egbert Koźmian. Koźmian and Ulrich spent many years in England emigrating after the November Uprising; Paszkowski, who was expelled from his school job after the uprising, translated Shakespeare in Warsaw and probably never spoke to an Englishman. The illustrations were done by H. C. Selous (1803-1890), an English painter, lithographer and illustrator who won high praise from Victorian audiences for his illustrations of Shakespeare's works. Between 1874 and 1886, 11 English editions of Shakespeare were published with his illustrations.
