Caches is the story of a married couple whose child, after several years of normal development, falls into autism, stops communicating with the environment, including with his distraught parents, regresses in development to a vegetative state. Despite attempts at treatment and therapy, the boy's condition continues to deteriorate, resulting in the need to place him in a nursing home. The plot of the novel takes place over the course of several weeks and centers around a married couple's departure for their annual vacation
Caches is widely regarded as a psychological novel, with a great deal of realism and even naturalism. Unlike Romanowiczowa's other novels, Caches contains a great deal of descriptions of urban and rural landscapes, scenes from the lives of local residents. The work also shows some parabolic features, becoming a travesty of the Exile from Paradise, a parable about the sources of evil and the meaning of suffering.
