Polish novel by the popular contemporary author Zofia Romanowiczowa.
The main character of Zofia Romanowiczowa's novel is a representative of the war generation, Maria, an escapee from a death march. During her escape, the woman finds a dying French prisoner in the woods, after whose death Maria appropriates her identity and henceforth leads a solitary life in the deceased's homeland. However, a few years later, she is caught up by events from her past, which she must face. In addition, the heroine suffers from the mysterious disease narcolepsy, in which she loses consciousness during seizures.
The island of the title is the Island of St. Louis, the place where the main character of the novel settled and took refuge. Metaphorically - the island is a place of seclusion.
