RENAN Ernest - The Life of Jesus. From [...] French translated by Andrzej Niemojewski. Wyd. II by the translator revised. Warsaw 1907, J. Mortkowicz. 8, pp. [4], 380. broch.
Losses to spine, otherwise good condition. "Renan, in his book 'The Life of Jesus,' undertook a systematic 'demystification' of the person of Jesus and portrayed him exclusively as a man; in doing so, he argued that the historical Jesus was not only not God, but did not even consider himself God, and such an interpretation is the work of his disciples who deified the master. 'The Life of Jesus', however, is not a book hostile to Jesus. According to Renan, he was an extremely noble man who was driven by the best of intentions; however, he is described as a man and only as a man, which made 'The Life of Jesus' one of the most famous books of its era, and its author was considered a blasphemer in Catholic and conservative and monarchical circles. 'The Life of Jesus' revealed the entire dilemma of the Catholic of the positivist period, showing on the one hand undisguised admiration for the personality of Jesus, and on the other - skepticism about the fact of his divinity" (Wikipedia). Renan, an Orientalist and historian of religion, is the author of the description of the Holy Land as the fifth Gospel.
