Pufendorf Samuel. Sju böcker om konung Carl X Gustafs bragder med förträffliga bilder sirade och med nödigt register försedda. Öfversatta af Adolf Hillman. Vol. 1-2 (in two vols.) Stockholm (Stockholm) 1915. Wahlström & Widstrand, k. [3], pp. 1-405, 407-698, portraits 12, illustrated plates 114 (including many fold-outs), 37 cm, period fawn cover binding, upper edge of f. gilt.
Exclusive early 20th century edition according to S. Pufendorf's editorially magnificent work "De rebus gestis a Carolo Gustavo", showing a picture of the reign of the Swedish King Charles X Gustav (1622-1660), together with a collection of faithfully reproduced copies of 114 engravings of original size, most of them fold-out. Because his reign covered the years of the Swedish invasion of Poland, large portions of the book are devoted to Polish affairs and provide a valuable source for the history of the Commonwealth of 1655-1660. The book is decorated with reproductions of copperplates made according to drawings by Erik Dahlbergh (1629-1703) - an engineer, quartermaster and draughtsman who accompanied the Swedish king in the war effort. More than 50 illustrations relate to Poland. They depict views of cities (e.g.: panoramas of Warsaw, Cracow, Toruń, Gdańsk, Szczecin, Brześć Kujawskie, Bydgoszcz, Grudziądz, Piotrków, Pułtusk, Kruszwica, Sandomierz), city plans (e.g.: Warsaw, Gdańsk, Elbląg), historical scenes (e.g. the oath of Polish magnates to the Swedish king on the outskirts of Cracow, the Polish envoy to Karol Gustav near Kolo, the meeting of the Swedish king with the Transylvanian prince Jerzy Rakoczy near Ćmielów) and battle scenes (including the battle of Gniezno, Goleb, Filipów, Opoczno, Tczew or the three-day battle of Warsaw). Pufendorf's book is considered theprimary iconographic source of the appearance of Polish cities, the costumes of the inhabitants and the principles of the art of war of the time. Cover: fawn. Marbled, five-panel spine, embossed. and gilt titulature and decorations in the form of war attributes.
