Book Deutscher Hausschatz so-called "Home Treasure" is a family magazine founded during the Kulturkampf period as a Catholic alternative to Die Gartenlaube magazine . The magazine played a pioneering role, showing illustrations with relatively good print quality from the very beginning, setting it apart from newspapers of the time. From around 1900, photographs increasingly replaced reproductions of paintings and prints. The word "Hausschatz" was common in high literature and music in the 19th century. Deutsche Hausschatz quickly became one of the most widely circulated German-language magazines.
