"The initiative to publish an album, which we give to the readers today, was born at the Exhibition of Books and Illustrations in the halls of the central exhibition building of Warsaw - Zachęta - in 1962. Part of the output of our graphic artists presented at this exhibition is included in this album. Out of nearly one and a half thousand illustrations, the authors and a committee working with them have selected the most valuable ones. (...) Polish book illustration at world exhibitions, including those in Moscow and Vienna, Milan and Sao Paolo, Canada and Mexico, China and India took pride of place, as did our posters, stage design and film. "
