PIOTR of Poznań (Petrus Posnaniensis, Petrus de Posnania).

SPLENDORES HIERARCHIAE POLITICAE ET ECCLESIASTICAE.

Cracow 1652, Luke Kupisz, (first edition). [40] p., 489 p., [16] p., vignette, coat of arms, initials; format 16x20.5 cm

Estreicher XXV, 103rd Peter of Poznań (ca. 1575-1658) is an extremely interesting and unjustly forgotten figure. He was one of the most prominent Polish humanists and clerics. His mental formation is evidenced by his studies in Salamanca, during which he began writing a Commentary on the Sentences of John Duns Scotus - a work he would continue throughout his life. Peter's exact name and social background are unknown. He signed his name as Petrus de Posnania or Petrus Posnaniensis, perhaps alluding in this aspect to the medieval ideal of the modest and anonymous author, or hiding his bourgeois background in this way. Once only he called himself Frater Petrus Bilinius de Posnania. From this we can guess that in reality his name was "Peter Bilinski." Having joined the Bernardines, he quickly climbed the ranks in the monastic hierarchy. In 1611 he was elected definitor at the Warsaw chapter, and in 1614 he was elected provincial. He founded convents in Prague, Dubna, Tytuvėnai and a Bernardine monastery in Przasnysz. In 1616 he began building a monastery in Alwernia, where he held the office of guardian several times and established a library. He also died there. As part of the Bernardine structures, he was also active abroad, including in Rome.

Splendores hierarchiae politicae et ecclesiasticae is the only work that Peter of Poznan personally published in Poland. It deals with the role of the various states in the state and the Church; it is both a theological and political work. It was dedicated to the Abbot of Plock, Tomasz Ujejski, whose coat of arms (Szreniawa) is on the back of the title page. [For: Ozorowski, E., Piotr z Poznania : Polish theologian of the 17th century, 1972].
