PASZKIEWICZ Henryk
RUSSIAN POLICY OF KAZIMIERZ THE GREAT
Warsaw 1925, published by Kasa im.Mianowskiego; p.285; format 15x22 cm
First edition!
A classic work of Polish medieval studies.
The author - a professor at the University of Warsaw who died in 1979 in exile in London - presented the intricate fate of the eastern policy of the last crowned Piast in an extremely competent manner. In his narrative, he did not limit himself to a description of successive wars, but made an attempt - a successful one - to show Casimir the Great's eastward expansion in the broad context of Poland's internal situation and its relations with Hungary, Bohemia and the Teutonic Order. The value of the book is also related to the timeliness of many of the detailed findings and the extensive scholarly apparatus, which often includes the only information on sources now lost. The author's erudition and historical culture brought - despite different points of view - recognition of many of his theses by Ukrainian historians.
To this day, after more than 75 years since its first publication, this work still remains the only monograph of the Ruthenian policy of Casimir the Great. H. Paszkiewicz's book should be in the library of every medievalist
