On both covers a gilded heraldic superexbris of Count Henry Brühl (1700-1763), one of the most influential Saxon officials. Being a protégé of August III, he held positions such as superintendent of porcelain manufactories, starosta of Lipnica, Piaseczyn, Bolimowski and Spisz, alderman of Bydgoszcz; he owned the Ossoliński Palace and two others in Warsaw, "his palace in Brody contained 'valued reportedly at a million thalers' (J. I. Kraszewski), the famous Schwanenservice - the world's largest porcelain service made at the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory on the minister's special order [...]. Brühl had the largest collection of watches and vests in Europe; he was also credited with a huge collection of wigs" (Wikipedia).
The frontispiece is carefully stenciled, with a panoramic view of Breslau at the bottom, with the title on the sash: "Bresslaw die Haupt Statt in Schlesienn". "On the sides two columns with female figures, at their feet a lion and an eagle, one of them supported by her left hand against the lion's head and holding a roll in her right hand, the other holding a cross in her right hand and a chalice with the host in her left [...]. Above the columns two angels hold a portrait of Ferdinand II" (Estreicher). After the preface, a fold-out map of Silesia, "Abris der Landschaft Schlesien Sampt den angrentzenden Königreichen und Ländern 1624." - preserved in a small number of pieces. In the lower left corner of the map signed: 'E. Hulsius sculps. "In the preface he criticizes his predecessor Cureus and lists his sources; among them Dlugosz, Kromer, Kl. Janicki and Miechowita. The work is divided into Liber regum, Liber ducum, Liber rerum (church and law), Liber civitatum. The book of kings [...] counts pp. 266, and it begins: Prologue, then go chapters about the name of the Silesians, about the wandering of the Silesians from Little Asia, about their history before Lech, about the reign of the Poles in Silesia, about Piast, about his successors Polish kings. From the v. XIV it passes into the history of the superior Silesian princes (Piasts, Luxemburgs, Jagiellons, Habsburgs). Book II [...] is devoted to the princes of Lignitz, Brest, Oleśnica, etc. - it brings a lot of epigraphic and diplomatic material. Book III [...] covers the history of the church [...] and secular offices and devices ([...] mainly from the 15th and 16th centuries). On page 517 is the Law of the city of Breslau [...]. On page 582 there are interesting articles of peasant rug courts. Book IV devoted to the description and history of individual cities. However, he begins with the physiography of the entire country. On p. 16 a description of the spas of Hirschberg and Landeck. On p. 36 the ethnography of Silesia; he also lists the names of the Silesian nobility (quite a few Polish). On p. 44 a description and history of Breslau; further on the rest of the cities [...]. The 60 final pages include indexes (index of chapters, index of things and names) and Errata [...]. Throughout the work there are many mentions of Poland, which the indexes juxtapose under Polen and Polnischer. But the whole work breathes dislike for Poland and a tendency to erase the traces of the Polish element in Silesia" (Estreicher).
