First edition. A collection of essays written by Milosz in 1951 and first published by Giedroyc. A book devoted to the role and situation of intellectuals behind the Iron Curtain, written immediately after the decision to emigrate. It was the cause of a huge number of polemics and disputes about communism. Hidden under pseudonyms are writers, once friends of the author: Alpha - Jerzy Andrzejewski, Beta - Tadeusz Borowski, Gamma - Jerzy Putrament, Delta - Konstanty Ildefons Galczynski.
