MICKIEWICZ Adam
WORKS
t. I-XX in 5 vols. [Complete]
Edited by Manfred Kridel and Leon Piwiński with a foreword by Jan Lechoń.
Warsaw 1930/1931, Bibljoteka Arcydzieł Literatury, pp. 200-450 each, plates with illustrations 17 [Grońska 393].
In vols. 1-2, 5-6 and 9-10, seventeen original woodcuts by Stefan Mrożewski.
"The year 1929 brought one of the few editions of collective works with original illustrations in Poland. Twenty volumes, bound in 10 volumes, compiled by Manfred Kridl appeared in the Library of Masterpieces of Literature [...] The announcement that the edition was illustrated by the most outstanding Polish graphic artists was somewhat exaggerated. In fact, the engravings were made by one, admittedly excellent, artist Stefan Mrożewski, giving seventeen expressive woodcuts, including four for `Pan Tadeusz'. In these illustrations one can already see the features that made this graphic artist's illustrative work so favorably received in the world. Above all, attention was drawn to the shimmering impressionistic texture of his works, creating a specific atmosphere in the compositions."
