A nice piece. In vol. 4th and 6th stamps, vol. 3rd with heavy staining of pages, vol. 4th on the first pages rose stains, rust spots in places and occasional underlining of text in pencil, otherwise good condition. Eustachy Januszkiewicz and Julian Klaczko undertook the effort and endeavor around the publication, intended to be the first posthumous monument to the works of the Bard. The publishers, not content with the materials given to them, turned on behalf of the Poet's family to all owners of manuscripts of Mickiewicz's poetry or letters, asking them to lend them immediately for publication in print in the edition being prepared. The Paris edition of "Adam Mickiewicz's Writings" of 1860-61 is thus the first complete edition, or rather the first attempt to collect all of the Poet's works. Of course, it was impossible to demand and expect from the publishers that this first posthumous edition was complete in the whole sense of the word. In the "Writings" published by Januszkiewicz and Klaczka were included for the first time fragments of the first part of "Dziady", Epilogue (then Prologue) to "Pan Tadeusz "and dozens of unknown poems. A selection from the Poet's correspondence was also added, a total of 35 letters, as well as several literary articles. Printed by L.Martinet on beautiful white velin. At the head of volume one is a beautiful portrait of Mickiewicz, engraved on steel "sons direction" by Henriquet Dupont. The reverse of the pre-title pages of many pieces bears the mark of Maurice Wolff's bookstore in St. Petersburg. Rare.
