Kara ben Nemesi and Haji Halef Omar follow the caravan route that leads from Baghdad to Istanbul. They traverse a large swath of the Turkish empire and come into contact with the tribes inhabiting these lands, learning firsthand about their customs and beliefs. On the glacis they experience many dramatic moments and rub shoulders with the plague that knocked down many of their companions.
