Matlakowski, a physician by training and a culturologist by passion, decided to delve into the details of the decoration of costume and everyday objects. He drew the numerous illustrations and plates himself or with the help of Stanislaw Witkiewicz. The finished work was completed just before Maltakovsky's death, and although he found support and willing promoters, a continuing lack of funds prevented publication. On his deathbed, he asked his friend Dr. Jozef Peszke to see to the publication of this work. Despite many difficulties, the book appeared in print, and Peszke provided an extensive introduction devoted to the author's character.
The posthumously published work, which together with the earlier "Folk Construction in Podhale" "pioneering [...] works, to this day priceless, concerning not only Podhale itself, but also the Tatra Mountains (shepherding and work in the forest); they are a basic source of knowledge about the traditional folk material culture ofPodhale and the Polish Tatra Mountains" (WET 730).
