Front pastedown cracked at spine, paper browning, stains. Description of the situation of Poles in Rome before and during Mickiewicz's arrival. On p. 9 is an account of the Pope's meeting with the poet: "The pope, enlightened by the Holy Spirit, blessed Poland on the condition that it remain Catholic; Mickiewicz knelt down and swore that Poland wanted to remain Catholic. Then the poet spoke on the movement that should come out of Rome [...] and talked too loudly, so that the Pope had to warn him paternally to keep his voice down. Pius, discouraged by the presence of Mickiewicz, was less gracious than usual, and promised nothing."
