LORENTZ Stanislas - Le Canada refuse de rendre a la Pologne ses richesses culturelles. Varsovie [1949]. Le Musée National. 8 podł., p. 85. broch.
Prominent rubbing of covers, minor stains. Author's name as read: Lorenz. Publication concerning the return of Polish cultural treasures exported to Canada during World War II. The matter was complicated by, among other things, disputes between the London and Warsaw governments; the former tried to stop the return of the treasures to Communist Poland (for fear of handing them over to Moscow), the latter sought their return, which would in part legitimize the government of postwar Poland. The custodians of national treasures stored in Canada were also conflicted: Jozef Krzywda-Polkowski, loyal to the government in London, and Stanislaw Swierz-Zaleski, who was cooperating with Warsaw. These and other reasons made it necessary to wait 15 post-war years for the return of the Wawel tapestries, royal insignia and priceless manuscripts. The brochure presented here was intended to put international opinion under pressure on the government in Ottawa. Numerous illustrations.
