"The lack of a scientific study of national costumes on Polish soil was decided to be filled in the 1930s by the émigré writer and publisher Leon Zienkowicz (1808-1870), who prepared the album 'Les costumes du peuple polonais,' for which he himself wrote an extensive and detailed costume commentary. The illustrations for this publication were made in lithography by Jan Nepomucen Lewicki (1795-1871), a graphic artist who (like the author of the text), as a result of the threat of arrest for participation in the November Uprising, had to leave his homeland and settled in France. The first edition of the work took place in 1838 in Strasbourg, subsequent editions were published in the following years already in Paris" (A. Swietoslawska "Costumes Polonais. Graphic Albums with Representations of Polish Folk Costumes from the 1st Half of the 19th Century" in Art of Costume, Strobe in Art (War.-Toruń 2016, p. 280)).
