"Leon was leaving Cracow on Saturday night. It was already raining for the second day.... When he opened the window on the train, he saw a downpour pounding the roofs of the carriages, and he got off early in the morning at the station in Tarnow. The train was an hour late, and incredible, suspicious traffic was visible. All trains in the direction of Lviv were halted. The bridge near Bogumilovice was in danger. From the information office, ad hoc set up on the platform, travelers were loudly announced that communication on the Lviv and Krynica line had been halted."
So begins "Water Above," a novel about the great flood of July 1934 and the rescue operation associated with it. The protagonist of the novel is a young cadet Leon Makara, who commands a rescue point in the village of Luśnia at the confluence of the Vistula and Dunajec rivers.
