[TadeuszKosciuszko ]. Handwritten letter from Tadeusz Kosciuszko to a minister of the French government regarding permission to import into France crates containing, among other things, silver and an ornamental saber, dated. 11 termidora r. VII (i.e. 29 July 1799) in Paris.
One-sided manuscript on ark. 29.4x20.2 cm, in French. Neat handwriting, no deletions or corrections, letter written in full (text and signature) by Tadeusz Kosciuszko. The text on the first page, the next three remained unsigned, the third page shows only the name "Kosciuszko" written in a foreign hand. The letter dates from the time when Kosciuszko, after a stay of several months in America, returned to Europe and settled in Paris. In the letter presented here, Kosciuszko seeks permission to send two crates with his personal belongings to France. The crates, sent from America, had just arrived in Bremen. They contained, among other things, gifts given to Kosciuszko in England: a silver service and a gilded saber. As British wares, they required special permission to be imported into France. Kosciuszko asks the unnamed minister to obtain permission from the minister of the Batavian Republic to transport the chests through the Netherlands and to give the customs agent permission from the French finance minister to bring the chests into the borders of the French Republic. The list of the contents of the crates mentioned at the end of the letter, which was once attached to this letter, has not survived. French official annotations in upper right corner. Very good condition.
