[CORRESPONDENCE to Hugo Steinhaus]. Collection of five letters to H. Steinhaus from the years 1947-1966.
Collection includes:
1. handwritten letter from Jaroslaw Kurylowicz, then an assistant professor at the Department of High Voltage Technology of the Wroclaw University of Technology, in Polish, asking for a loan of "a few dollars" and help in obtaining parts needed to repair damaged instruments. Letter addressed to Ithaca, USA, dated. August 1, 1947 in Breslau, with preserved envelope
2. typewritten letter, hand-signed by Leonard Jimmy Savage, a mathematician at the University of Chicago, in English, informing, among other things, about the post-war fate of Antoni Zygmund, a representative of the mathematical school of Warsaw, and including a request to send missing Steinhaus articles. Letter addressed to Steinhaus' Wrocław address, dated. 8 III 1954 in Chicago
3. typewritten letter from the University of Sussex, in English, informing that a check has been sent and clearing the honorarium due. Letter addressed to Falmer Campus at Sussex, dated. 31 V 1966
4. handwritten letter from Roy Lee Adler, a mathematician at Yale University working on ergodic theory at the time, in English, requesting that unattached letters be sent here to mathematicians in Poland: S. Gladysz, C. Ryll-Nardzewski, S. Hartman and E. Marczewski and to send one of Steinhaus' articles. Letter without date. On the back a handwritten note (probably in Steinhaus' hand): "Encl."
5. excerpt from a handwritten letter by an unknown sender from Cambridge, in English, expressing sympathy for Steinhaus' wartime experiences and briefly describing the fate of her own family at the time. Letter without ending or signature, dated. October 2.
Condition of letters not very good: folding marks, soiling, signs of dampness.
