KORBUT Gabrjel - Polish Literature from the Beginnings to the World War. A handy informational book for those studying the history of the development of Polish writing. Edition II enlarged. Vol. 1-4. Warsaw 1929-1931. druk. J. Cotty. 8, pp. XII, 621; [4], 439; [4], 607; [6], 378. late fp. with extant broch. cover.
Good condition. Life's work of the prominent literary historian and bibliographer, being a bio-bibliographical dictionary of Polish writers and poets. "In it he covered the entire Polish writing output in the field of broadly understood culture, organizing the material according to literary eras and thematic and genre groups [...]. The concept and arrangement of the work proved - despite some inconsistencies - to be of lasting utility" (LPPE). The first edition (much slimmer than the present one) was published in the years 1917-1921. The layout and selection of entries differs significantly from the "New Korbut" published since 1963. In the last volume a dedication in print "To the memory of my son, Julk, deceased in solitude and in anguish, in a distant foreign land, I dedicate these books".
