"My intention was to write a textbook. By saying so, I do not make the absurd claim that I succeeded in presenting the history of Marxism in an uncontroversial way, devoid of my own opinions, my own principles of interpretation and my own inclinations. What I mean is that I have tried to present this history not in the form of a loose essay, but rather in such a way as to accommodate in it a stock of the most important news that could be used by anyone who wants to be introduced to the subject, regardless of whether he agrees or disagrees with my assessments. (...) this book is an attempt at the history of Marxism, that is, the history of doctrine. It is not a history of socialist ideas. Nor is it a history of the political parties or movements that adopted this doctrine in various versions as their own ideology. (...) The textbook character of the book is evident also in the fact that I have tried to give in it basic information that shows the relationship between the development of the doctrine and its functions as a political ideology."
