Edward Smigly-Rydz was a Polish general and politician who served as Commander-in-Chief of the Army during the defensive war in September 1939. The day after the Soviet Union's aggression against Poland, he and the Supreme Commander's Staff crossed the border into Romania, where he was interned. In October 1941, he secretly returned through Hungary to occupied Poland, where he remained in the underground until his death in December of the same year.
