From the preface: "As an eye-witness of its [Galicia's] present state, I have tried to capture the epoch in which this Polish province passed from the government of the Republic of Poland to the Austrian one". The author "gave a blackened picture of the economic and social relations of the Austrian partition and put all the blame for the country's backwardness on the partitioning government [...], while he presented the nobility as patriotic, innocent and oppressed" (PSB).
