The main work of Walerian Kalinka (born November 20, 1826 in Cracow, died December 16, 1886) - Polish clergyman, historian, founder of the Polish Province of the Resurrectionists. "Sejm Czteroletni" is to this day the best source study of the history of the Four-Year Sejm, preceding the disappearance of the Republic from the maps of Europe. The author presents the figure of King Stanislaw August Poniatowski in a favorable light as a person trying to repair the system in unfavorable political conditions. He left the work unfinished, interrupting it in the course of analyzing the May 3 Constitution, which he evaluated positively with reservations: "The state disrupted by more than a century of anarchy, unable to govern itself or defend itself, proved capable of improvement, capable of standing on its own strength, as long as it was not disturbed by its neighbors.
