Condition b. good. Exlibris. Description of Robert Johnston's (1783-1839) travels in the area of the Russian Empire and the Kingdom of Poland. He began his expedition from Scandinavia, across the Baltic Sea to Poland, here he visited Gdansk, Oliva, Elblag, Frombork. Continuing his expedition eastward, through Königsberg, Tilsit, Klaipeda, Kronstadt, he reached St. Petersburg, then Novgorod and Moscow. He visited many more cities in Russia and Poland, including Warsaw, Lowicz, Poznan and many others, until he reached Berlin where he ended his journey. His descriptions include information on history, monuments, museums, churches, administration and more. Entirely decorated (set of engravings) with beautiful, picturesque aquatints with images of major cities that the author visited (including Oliwa Monastery, Frombork, Tylża, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kremlin, Borodino, Smolensk, Borisov). A beautiful and rare work.
