This is the first comprehensive editorial presentation of old views of Gdansk, starting with its earliest panorama from 1573, and ending with engravings created in the Stanislawski era just before the first partition of Poland. Executed in noble graphic techniques, copperplate and etching, they depict "the royal city of Gdansk, belonging to the Polish Crown (...), from which all the crown's goods are drained down the Vistula River, and from there other nations of states and kingdoms buy these goods and present there their imported goods, which the Polish Crown needs".
Gazing at the centuries-old engravings we come across buildings familiar to us and in a similar form, we find not only beauty lost, but also beauty regained and alive, enriching the everyday life of the port city on the Motlawa River - the traditional and contemporary maritime capital of the country. This album is the first such comprehensive presentation of old views of Gdansk, which, thanks to their artistic and documentary qualities, played a huge role in the work of post-war reconstruction of the city.
