The theme is indeed romantic: an escaped gallerist and villain, forced to care for an orphaned girl, experiences a spiritual transformation. And let's add that this picturesque story is set against the backdrop of the storms and turmoil of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, providing only a pretext for presenting a colorful panorama of human fates.
