"The Beautiful Twenty-Year-Old" is a special work in Mark Hlasko's oeuvre - formally a memoir, it is no less literary than his novels and short stories. Hlasko describes his life in pre-October Poland and in exile, he writes about the people he loved, with whom he drank, with whom he sat in prisons, he writes about life, which is itself a novel. While reading this book, the reader is constantly confronted with the question of whether he is dealing with the truth or just a "true fabrication," whether Hlasko - the narrator and protagonist - is a real character or a self-creation.
