"Le Docteur Pascal" - The last, "concluding" volume of the Rougon-Macquart series. This is the only novel in the series, the action of which is already set after the fall of the Second Empire. The main characters are Pascal and Clotilde Rougon. The main character, Dr. Pascal Rougon, lived for years in Plassans, working on a monumental monograph on inheritance. While collecting materials for it, he mainly gathered news about his own family, a model case of the inheritance of mental illness. Thus, on the pages of the novel appears, so to speak, a summary of the fate of the other Rougons, Macquarts and Mouret, the protagonists of the subsequent works of the series.
