During the war Leszek Elektorowicz was a soldier of the Home Army, as well as a louse feeder at Prof. Rudolf Weigl's Institute for Spotted Typhus and Virus Research in Lviv. He passed his high school diploma at secret classes and graduated from the Jagiellonian University with a degree in Polish Studies. He made his debut in 1947 in "Dziennik Literacki". In 1950-1956, he gave up participation in literary life and publication in protest against Socialist Realism. In 1957 he joined the staff of "Literary Life″, from where he was removed in 1971 after criticizing the policies of W. Machejk. In 1972-1977 he was literary manager of the "Bagatela" Theater, removed after the 1976 strikes in Radom for signing a letter in defense of the workers. He co-founded the first independent literary magazine "Pismo″ (1980-1983). He is a founding member of the Association of Polish Writers. In 1966/67, as part of the Creative Writing School, he lectured on Polish poetry at the Universities of Iowa, Berkeley, California, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Texas and others. He is a member of the Chapter of the "Unbroken in Word" Medal. In 2009, he received the Gloria Artis Gold Medal. He was Zbigniew Herbert's closest friend.
